Citi - Virtual Account Numbers

Virtual Account Numbers let customers generate temporary card numbers for online purchases, protecting their real account information.

This was a net-new feature for Citi, not a redesign, which meant there was no existing experience to reference.

I partnered with a UX designer to build the entire content experience from scratch: the marketing landing page, the step-by-step setup flow, the dashboard for managing active and deactivated numbers, transaction views, confirmation screens, expiration alerts, and deactivation modals.

The content challenge was threefold:

  • As the concept was unfamiliar to most Citi customers, the landing page had to sell the idea before it could sell the action.
  • The setup flow had to feel simple even though the underlying functionality (linking cards, setting expiration windows, configuring daily spend limits) wasn't.
  • The legal landscape was complicated enough that users had to agree to terms and conditions before even entering the flow, which meant the content had to build enough trust and clarity upfront to earn that commitment.

I also wrote the FAQ, which was an interesting exercise in anticipating questions no one had asked yet for a product no one had used.
